13 Months

Still loving the water.

We enjoyed being able to say that Quinn was a year old for the past month, but now we're back to counting his age in months...sigh. When do we jump to years again? After two perhaps.

Well, at 13 months old Q-Bert's little personality is really starting to shine. He has a few not-so-pleasant habits like whining and complaining during dinner time. You'd think we were torturing him when we try to feed him anything green. He screams and contorts his body and the tears start streaming from his eyes....he's very dramatic about it (perhaps acting is in his future?). Diaper changes can yield similar results, so we change him as infrequently as possible! :)

On the more fun side, he's becoming more interactive with other kids, and is having a great time at daycare. Here he is with Rainy's daughter, Claire. Claire loves to help take care of the kids and especially Quinn since he's still (barely) small enough for her to carry around like a dollbaby.

Another fun recent development is the kid's vanity. He LOVES to look at himself in the mirror! If you put a hat or shoes or a new shirt on him he immediately runs into his bedroom to check himself out. We have multiple videos of this phenomenon, because we think it's pretty hilarious. Here is one of them, but if you really want a taste of how vain he is you can see much more here (towards the end of the set).

He has also started to blow kisses and to do a few babysigns (milk and more). He loves to "hug" his stuffed animals and will also now hug us.

He has a newfound fascination with doors and will open and close anything he can. On a couple of occasions he's closed himself into a room when I've turned my back. I think it's time to officially babyproof the house. Oh, and by the way, when we put this horsey backpack on him the other night guess what he immediately did...yes, he ran into the bedroom to admire his reflection!

We're starting to get the hang of riding the car, but he still prefers walking and pushing it.

He's still not talking much, although he loves to repeat DaEE DaEE over and over and over again. Cute perhaps, but where's the Mama?????? He also still says Uh Oh, but that's about it. All in all we're having a great time with him lately. Rainy, the woman who takes care of him, has been threatening to cut his bangs since they fall into his eyes, but I just can't bear the thought of cutting his hair just yet...I like his shaggy little do. I think once he has a true mullet we'll consider a haircut.

Little Ham

This is what happens when you surround a baby with all of his adoring grandparents at one time. You think he likes the attention???

Nana and Ervin come to town

It was great to have my parents here for a few days. They managed to find some time for a visit between my brother's graduation (Congrats Andy!!) and a friend's wedding. Quinn really soaked up the attention (will post a pretty humorous video soon)...

Quinn loves his Nana.

On my day off we went to Cabrillo National Monument, where we did a short hike and checked out some tide pools.

Handsome as ever, Dad observes the action from above the cliffs.

Jeff introduces a couple of girls and Quinn to a little crab.

There were some amazing rock formations along the coast.

The family, minus me

Mom, modeling in front of some pretty cool erosion patterns in the rock.

Once we arrived at the point we noticed an awesome tall ship sailing out. We later learned that it was a military ship from ??Brazil?? on its way to Hawaii.

I'm free I'm free!

Different kind of baby

Today while conducting a bird survey I came upon this little nugget in the trail:
It's a baby California Quail. At first I thought he was dead, but then I noticed a bit of movement and I picked him up.
He was very limp and cold and kept his eyes tightly shut. I held him in my fist for a while and tried to warm him up. After about 20 minutes or so I felt a bit of movement in my hand and opened it up to take a peek:
He started to peep softly. I thought I should try putting him on the ground to see if anyone would come back for him.
Although I heard quail in the area, nobody seemed to notice that they were missing one little chick. When I went back to check on him he was stuck on his back with his huge feet waving in the air. Poor guy. So I scooped him back up.
I called a local wildlife rehabber who took him in. Hopefully I'll receive an update on his status soon.

Photoshoot for Grammy

Grammy (Jeff's mom) insisted that the boys (Quinn and cousin Kyan) have a joint photo session for their 1st birthdays (she would like this to be a yearly event, but we'll have to see...). We finally conceded and I have to admit that it was kinda fun. There's nothing like sitting in a studio dancing around trying desperately to get 2 one-year-olds to smile at the same time. Quinn was pretty reserved on the occasion, but we managed to get one real smile out of him. Here are a few of the photos.

June Already???

How time flies when you're really busy. We spent the holiday weekend fighting a nasty illness. Quinn had conjunctivitis and an ear infection while mom and dad had something more akin to strep throat. We ended up all being on antibiotics and we're finally feeling better.

Upon his recovery we thought it time to make the little man start earning his keep around here. We've started with having him sweep the kitchen floor. He doesn't seem to mind.

I had to share a photo of him in this cute little hat that used to be my dad's...it won't fit him for too much longer.

This is kinda funny...we've been feeding Quinn blueberries for dessert recently. They're kinda messy so I thought I'd try another berry (thinking it'd be less mess). Silly me for choosing blackberries! This was the result. Brings back images from nature films of lions with their prey.

Oh, but the boy loves his berries so guess we'll just stick with our after dinner bathtime routine. :)
